Course Overview
Programme Aims and Objectives
This programme aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills in the areas of energy and environment, with special reference to the Asian settings. In particular, the programme caters to the rising demand from the business and industry sectors for managers with contemporary views on energy, environment and sustainability. Besides emphasis on technical sciences, graduates of the programme are equipped with holistic knowledge in the related energy and environmental aspects of economics, policies and laws. Based on such knowledge, the graduates can develop innovative and creative solutions to various energy and environmental problems.
Entrance Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following specific entrance requirements:
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in physical sciences or an engineering discipline. Those with an undergraduate degree in other disciplines but, with an attainment of A-level physics or equivalent, or sufficient working experience in the related fields, will be considered on a case by case basis.
Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:
- a score of 79 (Internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)@#; or
- an overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS)@##; or
- a score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Chinese mainland; or
- other equivalent qualifications.
@TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years. Applicants are required to provide their English test results obtained within the two years preceding the start of the University's application period.
# Applicants are required to arrange with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send their TOEFL results directly to the University. The TOEFL institution code for CityUHK is 3401.
## Applicants are required to arrange for sending their IELTS result(s) via the IELTS Results Service e-delivery to the University. Please note that applicants with an overall band score of 6.0 will be required to pass an interview for English proficiency conducted by the concerned academic unit. Interviews for other applicants may not be required.
Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies
This programme has been selected by the University Grants Committee (UGC) for the scholarship award under the main priority area of ‘Sustainable city’. Scholarships are available to local students admitted to the programme. Nominated students will be invited to submit applications for the scholarship. What You’ll Learn
The programme emphasizes a balance of both technical and soft sciences. Students are required to complete 12 credit units of core courses (6 credit units of core courses in Programme Core Courses and 6 credit units of Stream Core Courses), and 18 credit units of elective courses.
Students can declare concentration for one of the streams: Energy Stream (ENE) and Environment Stream (ENV), or not to declare for any concentration.

Graduates of MSc Energy and Environment who have successfully completed the programme, can partially fulfill the academic requirements* and will only need an equivalent professional experience to apply for Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) under the Engineering Council and Society for the Environment (SocEnv) in UK.
* with an accredited BEng / BSc Degree from any of Washington Accord’s 19 Signatories.
