Course Overview

Learn To Program JavaScript (in ten easy steps)

The simplest way to learn to program JavaScript - the language of the web.

Learn To Program JavaScript (in ten easy steps) is suitable for beginner programmers. Step-by-step it explains how to write JavaScript code to run in a web browser on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X.

JavaScript is the language of the web. If you need to program web sites to run on desktop computers or mobile devices, you have to know JavaScript.

This course explains all you need to know in order to write JavaScript and make sense of other people’s JavaScript code. Every step of the way you can follow along with ready-to-run code in in short, easy-to-understand JavaScript programs.

You will begin by learning the core features of programming – variables, functions and data types. You will move on to learn about specific capabilities of JavaScript – how to use it to automate web pages, hide email addresses, swap stylesheets interactively; how to load XML data to create so-called AJAX applications, how to animate images and use some of the drawing capabilities of HTML5.

The sample projects are all provided ready for you to download, run and modify. The course also includes a course eBook, The Little Book Of JavaScript, that provides even more information on the topics being discussed.

The course instructor,Huw Collingbourne, is Director of Technology with SapphireSteel Software, a company that specialises in Visual Studio development tools for professional programmers. This is an excellent primer for anybody just getting started with JavaScript. I especially liked the straightforward explanations of classless Objects and Associative Arrays. The later sections on HTML5, jQuery, and editors are a bit long in the tooth in 2020, but that's not a big deal since it's largely outside the scope of the course. It might be nice to add a section on one of the newer JavaScript frameworks like React or Angular at some point.

This course was very easy to follow. I very much appreciate the printable book to follow along with. It goes very well with the videos and is useful for taking notes. I also appreciate the digital book with the codes to also follow along with the videos.

The instructor is knowledgeable and does mention a few interesting caveats about JavaScript, but this course is not for beginners. At least, not for someones who doesn't have any prior knowledge about programming. I have some experience in Java, Python and touched C#, and I had trouble following some of the concepts of the course. The instructor could go into more details about certain topics. Some other topics are completely missing to understand what is happening like callbacks. Overall, this is not a bad course if you just want a quick overview of JavaScript and have a mini 'crash' course.

I am a retired professional mainframe programmer/analyst. I am trying to learn a variety of PC type programming mostly for my own personal use and in case I get an opportunity to work. I have already studied the basics (no pun intended) of several object-oriented languages including Java, so what I wanted from this course was the details of JavaScript and how it differs from those langueages. This course was very helpful in satisfying that purpose for me; I have skimmed thru the course the first time without stopping to do the hands-on work, but I expect to come back taking it more slowly and working at least some examples for myself. (FYI my professional expertise is in IBM zOs Assembler and COBOL.)
