Course Overview

Discovering Albanian 1

Albanian for beginners (low to mid A1)

Albanian is the official language of Albania and Kosovo and it is a co-official language in Macedonia. In the Balkan region there are about 6 million speakers of Albanian and about 7.5 million speakers around the world. Albanian is considered a minority language in Croatia, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Montenegro. There are older forms of Albanian spoken in Greece and Italy as well.   The opening of Albania in the 1990s to broader trading and diplomatic relations with other nations has created a need for better knowledge and understanding of this beautiful and old language and culture. Albania applied to access the EU in 2009 and accession talks started in 2020.

This course, DISCOVERING ALBANIAN 1 - Part I, is an introduction to Standard Albanian. In this first part, we will study lessons 3-5 of the textbook DISCOVERING ALBANIAN 1 by Linda Mëniku and Héctor Campos and published by the University of Wisconsin Press (ISBN 978-0299 25084). Lessons 1 and 2 can be studied for free in the course ALBANIAN FOR BEGINNERS by Héctor Campos here in Udemy. It is highly recommended that participants get hold of this book where all dialogs, vocabulary and grammar explained in the videos here in Udemy can be found. In this book you can also find additional exercises (with answers) to practice further all the grammatical points taught in the videos. Exercises from the workbook that accompanies that book are included with this course under the RESOURCES for Lesson 3A.  To access the transcript for the Listening Comprehension texts found in this course, participants should get COLLOQUIAL ALBANIAN by the same authors and published by Routledge (ISBN 978-0-415-59796-8). Additional exercises for grammar, vocabulary and listening comprehension can also be found in this textbook. Various interactive exercises to practice the vocabulary and structure of each lesson in this course can be found in the RESOURCES tab.

In the full course to be published here in Udemy you will learn to talk about school, work, vacations, travel, health, entertainment, movies, etc.  After you´ve completed all the lessons in the book DISCOVERING ALBANIAN 1, you will have reached level B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The full course will be equivalent to one-year study at the college level.

This course is very in-depth with grammar, and that seems to be its main focus. If you’re hoping to learn to speak and understand Albanian in a practical way (something like the Pimsleur method), you will likely be disappointed. However, if your main interest is mastering grammar and sentence structure, then you’ll probably find it useful. For context, I spent a couple of weeks using the Ling app and also completed Pimsleur Albanian 1 before starting this course. Without that background, I would have been completely lost. Because of this, I don’t think it qualifies as a good “Albanian for absolute beginners” course. Starting from zero here would be very frustrating. That said, if you already know some basic sentences, vocabulary, and conversation patterns, you may get real value from this course. It feels mostly geared towards a school-style grammar course, rather than a practical speaking approach.

Dieser Kurs hat mir sehr viel geholfen. Manchmal ein bisschen schnell zum nachsprechen und zuhören (halt wie Albaner in der Regel sprechen), aber man kann ja auch das Tempo reduzieren. Hat mir Spaß gemacht und ich hab schon viel gelernt! Shumë mirë, faleminderit për mësimet!

I have taught myself the basics of Albanian using the excellent textbook Discovering Albanian I by Linda Mëniku and Héctor Campos, on which this Udemy course is based, some time ago, and now that the follow-up textbook Advancing in Albanian is finally available, I signed up for this course in order to revise those basics before progressing. The Udemy course really adds an extra dimension to the material, and it has really helped me get back up to speed. Well done!
