Fabulae Faciles: Hercules

Audio files, texts and study tips for the Fabulae Faciles stories on Hercules.

This series of lectures picks up after the Perseus stories, as represented in the textbook, A Junior Latin Reader. It's advisable to run through those stories first (also available on Udemy) before approaching these Hercules passages. Your experience with Perseus will not only build up the basic vocabulary and syntax you'll need for the Hercules stories, but you'll also learn how best to use the materials on this site.

It's a great review; however, the good professor tends to gloss the obvious Latin words and skip over those that need more commentary. Case in point is the use of "obicio" which is so important in the Hercules story of horses of Diomedes. The whole story turns on this important thematic verb. I would appreciate more attention to these literary matters, realizing that this is mostly a basic grammar course. Also, I would appreciate more consistency in recitation of the Latin passages. Short vowels are short and long vowels are long, yet these get repeatedly misread for whatever reason. Maybe too much coffee! Still, a great course for review. I am a classics scholar who needs to get back to speed in reading Vergil and the Golden Age authors. But this course is a way to really review FAST (for me) and get to the good stuff. Gratias ago.

Great course. Took awhile to get through since there are a lot of stories. But, by taking it slow and doing all the reviews, my Latin reading ability has greatly improved. The instructor does an excellent job of explaining the grammar as you go along. Also, the way he translates the stories is excellent, giving you just enough help to get you through the passage.
