Supporting Success in Autistic Students

Learn best practice strategies to support the success of learners with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a well know condition, but one that is not know well. This course is focuses on building educators and support workers understanding of ASD and helping you develop a repertoire of proven strategies to support success in your learners with autism.

You will be guided through the course, by your instructor, who is a respected autistic advocate and teacher, looking at topics which include:

  • Dispelling myths associated with autism.

  • The history and diagnosis of ASD.

  • Building support plans.

  • A range of strategies to support success.

  • Strength based approaches to autism.

This course consists 12 video lectures, eight readings, as well as access to a range of downloadable resources and links to external resources.

Through each section of the course, there will be opportunities for you to check your understanding and recall of the concepts being taught to you in each section through quizzes.

You will have the opportunity to apply your understanding of ASD and how to support success in your autistic student through two assignments. The first one focuses on you working through information provided in the form of meeting notes and information submissions to develop a support plan for a hypothetical student. The second assignment, you will work through five case studies where you will identify the student’s strengths and how they may be supported. These assignments gives you the opportunity to engage in a community of practice, by providing feedback on other participants answers and getting feedback on your own.
