Welcome to the COMPLETE Sound Design Fundamentals Guide!

This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to dive into making music with synthesis! Whether you are a beginning musician, an active musician, or an aspiring musician - this class is perfect for you!

In Sound Design Fundamentals: Sampling, we will examine the essentials of Sound Design using Ableton Live and Propellerheads' Reason software and focusing on principles of Sampling. We will explore three fundamental topics:

  • Using samples for generating sounds, and the legal implications of sampling (And two pro tips for avoiding all the legal issues)

  • Using samples to generate new sounds through manipulation and synthesis

  • Using samplers to control drum sounds and sequence dynamic drum patterns.

This system keeps the technical jargon to a minimum and gets you making your own sounds quick.

Praise for Courses by Jason Allen:

"It seems like every little detail is being covered in an extremely simple fashion. The learning process becomes relaxed and allows complex concepts to get absorbed easily. My only regret is not taking this course earlier." - M. Shah

"Great for everyone without any knowledge so far. I bought all three parts... It's the best investment in leveling up my skills so far.." - Z. Palce

"Excellent explanations! No more or less than what is needed." - A. Tóth

"VERY COOL. I've waited for years to see a good video course, now I don't have to wait anymore. Thank You!" - Jeffrey Koury

I give the course a poor passing grade. It is said that it is just about the basics of sampling, but this is TOO basic. Not even anything about the history of sampling and the development of its technology over the years. There are some techniques to manipulate the sample, but nothing about time stretching, beat slicing, etc. Those are basic things in every sampler. Nothing about the best way to record my own samples, bits, kHz, etc. Had recorded at least 1 example of a home-made sample, with a field recorder, a guitar or whatever. Nothing about the organization of samples in your own library. Nothing about hardware samplers. How is this possible? What is the difference between software and hardware samplers and why do you use one or the other? What are the pros and cons, etc. Very disappointing this course.

The instructor seems SO nice and knowledgeable but this course is a glorified documentation/FAQ page that says "this knob controls this parameter." If you have never seen a sampler before, it will be a great course! If you have used a sampler before and are looking for the "next steps," this course unfortunately probably won't teach you anything new.

Even tho I enjoy J's most courses, I have to say this one is not as good as his music theory courses. He gives general intro- which is really basic about the simpler and sampler. In the description it says J will teach us how to use those tools to build amazing sounds, but most of the demos J gave for this class are really casual and simple. I have always liked his class, but this one definitely could be better

As always, phenomenal class, filled with treasures of tidbits that are superuseful. I keep coming back to Jason's classes, and even return to some of the ones I've initially taken to pick up additional material I may have missed the first time around. Because of this class, I no longer fear the sampler or simpler. I'm totally comfortable using them now. Thanks Jason! As always. :)
