Design User Interfaces for Apps & Web
Version: This is the only course on Udemy featuring the latest features of Sketch such as Libraries.
Sketch is an application which has already won the hearts of UI and UX designers around the world, even though just about anybody can learn how to use it. Among all the advantages, too numerous to list here, Sketch has a big disadvantage – it is only available for macOS. If you are one of the lucky owners of a Mac, though – it would be a waste not to make use of the potential of Sketch. Let me assure you that designing interfaces has never been so fast, and most of all – pleasant!
Course highlights:
- Practical, A-Z project of App design
- Tips & Tricks, make most of Sketch Tools
- Vector Tools and Symbols
- Colors, Icons, and Typography
- BONUS! Creating a working, interactive Prototype
The course has been designed to show you full functionality of Sketch, to teach you how to best make use of its potential. Some of the topics are best presented over the course of a few, theoretical lessons, for example exporting graphics. Others, such as preparation of resources for a new project are better explained in practice. That is why I decided to divide the course into two parts. The first one is a greatly compressed compendium of hundreds of important techniques, key shortcuts, tips and tricks. Because of how vast the knowledge condensed in the video is, it was recorded with fast narration, so if you need to… don’t hesitate to stop the video and go back to any of the lessons, even the basic ones. The other half of the course is entirely practical. We focus on the use of learned techniques to design a few screens of an intelligent home app. Studying both parts of the course will teach you all the necessary theoretical concepts and equip you with practical skills needed in your everyday work on projects.
The second half of the course is focused on designing a complete project in Mobile First scheme. It will serve as a testing ground for particular combinations of techniques you must learn and use in the real projects. First, we configure the Grid and Artboard settings, then we move on to designing the icons and Symbols, and finally we create final application boards. Testing all the functions of Sketch you have learned about in theory, will showcase their practical usage and teach you good designing habits.

There are aspects of the course that need to be updated like button placement, the find center command behavior of the pen tool, auto re-positioning of texts in headers, and the use of specific plugins especially the content generator one as that plugin is no longer supported in the latest version of Sketch. However, I did think that this course did a good job of explaining how to use the software and effectively conveyed the importance of using keyboard shortcuts to speed up your workflow.

At the start there is no clear explanation of how the attached course material can be accessed and used. The course is not kept up to date for Sketch software updates so you can lose a lot of time trying to find/get something to work. A simple slide insert advising of changes & providing workarounds (as I've seen top Udemy course instructors do) would be very helpful. The presenter is very knowledgable and clearly enjoys the subject. However it can be hard to follow along at times. He often talks constantly while doing things, and while he may be imparting useful design and practical advice, he's not necessarily clearly explaining and re-iterating the specific mechanics of his actions with the software. This can make it quite frustrating and time consuming and require multiple stop/start/replay cycles to see exactly what he was doing on screen to achieve a result. Overall a good course. But you will need a lot of patience, and persistence to work through it. This is equally because of the attention to the fiddly detail needed to get to grips with this type of software and also the instructors presentation style.

Very good course, like most of Grzegorz's courses, but I have one thing. It's best to learn new things right away by doing a project. Lessons where Grzegorz showed the tools are very boring and it's hard to watch them at the beginning. So I suggest you change the order of lessons. Start with the project and leave the lessons where you show the tools at the end so that the people who finished the course could quickly return and check the functionality if they don't remember. This is very small changing but I can imagine that people think that they should watch all the lessons in order because they won't know important things and you will not repeat it later and I think that they can quickly discourage and don't finish the course at all. Thank you very much for the course and best regards!:)
