Course Overview

Learning the UNIX Command Line on OS X

Mac beginners can easily become power OS X users by using the Terminal to interact with the UNIX shell.

Why should you take this course?

Several decades since its inception, UNIX is still at the heart of the Internet and computing in general. In my view, a tool this powerful that has withstood such a rapid change in a fast-paced industry is something that needs to be learned and used regularly.

If you own a Mac and are a programmer, software engineer, web developer or designer, network or systems engineer, or simply interested in learning more about your system, you're really missing out if you don't learn the UNIX command line. It is simply one of the most powerful technical skills you can have available in your arsenal.

At the end of this course, students should possess the skills necessary to start using the UNIX operating system with greater proficiency, as well as the ability to learn more about the system on their own.

Overall a good round up course for a beginner MacOs user and Junior Engineer. Was expected some depth and also MacOs for this course is almost 5 years old, I wish there are more tips and tricks for new OS as well some more sections on processes and shell scripting could help

lots of dead time and he skips over a lot of things without explaining them. I suppose it makes us have to search for stuff ourselves but it also makes the course less complete. Overall learned a lot!

Though marketed towards beginners, I feel the course still assumes too much knowledge. He uses the mail command to send an email right from the command line. When I tried to imitate him, my computer would not send the email. Apparently there is a setup process before the mail command can be used. Also, I am nearly half-way through the course and still don't know why I should use Unix. The GUI is still quicker, easier, and more powerful for me. I need to see the endgame. The author keeps referring to programs you can write through the command line, but I still don't understand how this can be done given the knowledge I have received so far from the course.
