Great class. I learned a lot. But I would have liked to see more visual examples when he spoke of different things vs watching him talk.

The instructor is warm, encouraging, and knowledgeable. Can't say I learned everything I need to know to make a documentary, but I did learn enough to get started. Great course.

Well the course was different than what I expected. Being a beginner i expected to have lessons on the art and craft of Documentary film making but the course turned out to be heavily loaded with ideas and tips about the process of making a documentary. The course does not even deal with shots and documentary aesthetics. Nor do we find help regarding the technical part of filming documentaries. But Mr. James Buffin has completed what he promised - of helping us understand the steps and work flow kind of stuff with sincerity . Yes those are indeed vital part of film making. The part on story structure had some useful insights with a practical illustration of Mr.Buffin's own short documentary film. Except this single illustration we don't find any illustration or video clips that would explains the crucial aspects of documentary film making. Here it was a bit disappointing but over all the course was worth pursuing as the process approach is hardly emphasized in any other course. Mr. James seems capable of delivering another course for those who would look for learning the aesthetics, art and craft of documentaries. I wish he puts together a course soon.
