From its early days in the 1960s, when it was known as digital picture processing, DIP has evolved dramatically. Pioneering work at institutions like Bell Labs, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and MIT laid the foundation for applications ranging from satellite imagery analysis and medical imaging to character recognition and image enhancement.

This course begins with fundamental concepts, introducing the origins of DIP, image sensing and acquisition techniques, and the crucial processes of sampling, quantization, intensity resolution, and spatial resolution.
