Course Information
Course Overview
Create compelling plots and well-crafted story arcs with practical tools and strategies that spark creativity.
Are you stuck at the beginning of your story… or lost halfway with no clear direction? This course gives you the confidence, clarity, and creative tools you need to structure your plot so it goes somewhere — and keeps readers invested from opening scene to final page.
Story Structure Mastery is a conversational, practical course that moves beyond theory into action. Instead of dry lectures, we talk about the real challenges writers face, with examples and strategies you can use immediately.
Here’s what you’ll discover:
→ How to design your plot with purpose so every chapter moves your story forward.
→ Ways to make your characters active participants in the plot, not just observers.
→ Techniques to avoid the common pitfalls that derail stories — like info-dumping or predictable pacing.
→ How to shape your story arc so readers stay curious and emotionally invested through the final scene.
This course is designed for any writer — from beginners to intermediate storytellers — who wants to make their plot feel intentional, irresistible, and memorable.
What you will learn:
How to build a powerful plot structure from idea to ending
Ways to craft story arcs that keep readers turning pages
Methods to develop believable, motivated characters tied to the plot
The best way to avoid common traps: info-dumps, clichés, and predictable pacing
How to use imagery and conflict to raise stakes and deepen engagement
You’ll finish with a clear understanding of how plot and arc work together, and actionable steps you can apply directly to your own projects.

I found this course very helpful in fleshing out an idea I had for a novel into something more complete and more interesting to readers. The series of concise lessens Ms. Maitland provides were a really good guide. Two aspects of the course that I found especially useful were her discussions of story threads (subplots) and of her Decision and Consequences Flowchart. These have helped me to map out my narrative, putting things in a visual format that I can reference while adding new story elements.
