Understanding ERP systems - in simple non-technical language

Learn about the theory of ERP systems like SAP S/4HANA, Oracle and Dynamics 365 - and their implementation

Understanding ERP systems

ERP platforms like SAP S/4HANA, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 play a central role in how modern organisations operate. They support and connect business processes, data, and roles across departments, shaping how work gets done every day.

This course provides a clear, friendly introduction to the key concepts behind ERP systems, explained in simple, non-technical language. The focus is not on system configuration or step-by-step system use, but on understanding what ERP systems are, how they work at a conceptual level, and how they support businesses.

This course is ideal for business stakeholders, ERP project team members or anyone who is new to the ERP domain and want a shared, practical understanding of ERP systems and their core concepts.

You’ll learn how ERP systems:

• support end-to-end business processes

• integrate and structure data across the organisation

• connect roles, responsibilities, and decision-making

While the main focus is on understanding ERP systems conceptually and in business terms, the course also explains foundational technical ideas—such as ERP system landscapes, databases, and environments—to help you see how the technical and functional pieces fit together.

With over 25 years of experience in ERP change management, I designed this course to close the gap between business, functional, and technical teams. When everyone understands the core ERP concepts and the broader context behind the system, collaboration improves and ERP initiatives deliver real value.

By the end of this course, you will:

• Understand what ERP systems are and the key concepts behind how they work

• See how processes, data, and roles connect end-to-end

• Recognise why business ownership is critical for ERP success

• Communicate more confidently across business, functional, and IT teams

• Avoid common misunderstandings that create ERP issues

• Contribute more effectively during design, data preparation, testing, and go-live

You’ll gain a strong foundation in ERP concepts, enterprise systems, and how platforms like SAP S/4HANA, Oracle ERP, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 support organisations in practice.

If you want clarity, confidence, and a shared understanding of how ERP systems really work, this course is your starting point.
