A Strategic Guide to Navigating the Dilemma Between Trust and Self-interest
The Art of Cooperation
This course explores the fundamental "game of choice" between cooperation and defection in both biological and professional spheres. Drawing on historical, biological, and mathematical perspectives, students will examine why cooperation provided a reproductive advantage to primitive human bands and how social interactions among microbes—ranging from mutualism to "cheating"—still mirror modern human behaviour.
Participants will engage with the mechanics of game theory through the Red-Blue game, a variation of the Prisoner's Dilemma, to learn that observed behaviour is often more reliable than verbal explanations. The curriculum focuses heavily on the winning strategy of Tit-for-Tat (TFT) and its many variants, teaching students how to be "nice but ruthless" and "instantly forgiving" to foster long-term stability.
Key Topics Covered:
The Anatomy of Defection: Analysing why individuals "play red," including self-protection, the pursuit of self-interest, and the impact of incomplete information or stereotypes.
Strategic Variants: In-depth study of adapted strategies such as Suspicious TFT for low-trust environments, Generous TFT for chaotic systems, and the Grim Trigger for high-stakes, zero-tolerance scenarios.
Cooperation in "Noisy Environments": Learning to navigate settings where technical errors, miscommunication, and random factors can cause unnecessary escalation.
Real-World Application: Examining cooperation and defection within business contexts, including supply chain logistics, trade barriers, organizational dynamics, and globalization.
Learning-Based Adaptations: Mastering the Win-Stay, Lose-Shift (Pavlov) strategy to optimise outcomes based on feedback loops and trial-and-error.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to identify the optimal cooperative strategy for their specific environment—whether noisy or predictable. The ultimate goal is to understand that ongoing cooperation is the winning approach and that developing strong relationships serves as the most effective barrier against defection.
