This course is technically accurate and clearly created by an instructor who knows DarkTable very well. The explanations of modules and sliders are correct, and the focus on essential tools rather than exhaustive coverage is a strong design choice. However, my overall experience was disappointing. The most significant limitation is the reliance on a single RAW image (the parrot photo) for almost the entire course. While this works for explaining individual modules, it severely restricts the educational depth. Different real-world editing challenges — flat images, harsh light, noise, dynamic range constraints, color casts — cannot be meaningfully demonstrated with one photo. As a result, the course emphasizes tool mechanics more than broader image evaluation and editing decisions. The choice of that sample image also introduces technical constraints. Parts of the sky are clipped at the sensor level, making highlight recovery impossible. This could have been a good opportunity to demonstrate DarkTable’s raw overexposure and clipping indicators and clarify the distinction between sensor clipping and creative white highlights introduced during editing. The artistic dimension feels uneven. Artistic intent is present, but often not fully articulated. For example, the instructor states a preference (“I like the composition, but there is a distraction…”), yet the reasoning behind why the composition works is not always explained. This makes it harder to translate the instructor’s decisions into broadly applicable editing judgment. Many demonstrations are extremely subtle. Combined with Udemy’s video compression, this often made differences difficult-or-impossible to perceive while watching, occasionally causing cognitive confusion about what a module actually changed. In self-practice this is less problematic, since slider effects can be exaggerated and then dialed back. Additionally, there is no lesson showing a complete start-to-finish edit. Seeing a full workflow — from initial evaluation to final image — would better connect the modules into a coherent editing strategy. Strengths: • The course maintains strong technical accuracy throughout, with clear explanations of what each module does. * The Filmic vs Sigmoid comparison is particularly well presented and framed in perceptual terms. * The discussion of noise reduction — especially the distinction between profiled denoise and contrast equalizer use — is practical and useful. * The masking lessons contain very solid advice on avoiding edge artifacts. * The instructor consistently promotes restrained editing and avoids the common overprocessed look. In summary, this is a technically solid course, but it feels incomplete as a beginner-level photo-editing education. It is useful for understanding DarkTable’s modules and controls, yet less effective for developing editing judgment and artistic decision-making.
