Course Information
Course Overview
Understand fabric behavior, drape, fibers & construction so your designs look right, fit right & feel professional.
The difference between an amateur design and a professional one?
Fabric.
You can have a great idea—but if you choose the wrong material, the design fails.
This course teaches you how to choose the right fabrics with confidence, so your designs don’t just look good in theory… they actually work in real life.
WHAT YOU’LL BE ABLE TO DO
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Choose the right fabric for any design or silhouette
Understand how fabric will drape, move, and behave before you cut it
Identify fibers, weaves, and fabric construction like a professional
Avoid common (and costly) fabric mistakes
Use fabric as a source of design inspiration
Communicate confidently with suppliers and production teams
This is what separates designers who guess… from designers who know.
WHY MOST DESIGNERS GET THIS WRONG
Most beginners:
Choose fabric based on how it looks—not how it behaves
Don’t understand structure vs fluidity
End up with designs that don’t translate into real garments
That’s why their work:
Looks off
Fits wrong
Feels unprofessional
This course fixes that.
WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT
This is not a dry textile course.
You’ll learn fabrics from a designer’s perspective, not just theory.
~ You’ll actually see how fabrics behave
~ You’ll understand why certain fabrics work (and others don’t)
~ You’ll start thinking like a designer when selecting materials
Including:
Real draping demonstrations on a dress form
Visual comparisons between fabric types
Practical decision-making (not just definitions)
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Fabric Categories – Woven, knit, non-woven
Fiber Types – Natural vs man-made (plant vs animal)
Fabric Behavior – Drape, weight, structure, movement
Weaves & Construction – Twill, herringbone, poplin, etc.
Grainlines & Fabric Direction – Warp, weft, and why it matters
Surface & Texture – Nap, hand, finish
Color & Fabric Interaction – How color behaves on material
Sustainability – Making better, more conscious material choices
THE REAL TRANSFORMATION
This course shifts you from:
“I pick fabric because it looks nice”
→ “I choose fabric because I understand how it will perform”“My designs don’t come out right”
→ “My designs translate exactly as I envisioned”“I’m guessing”
→ “I know what I’m doing”
STUDENT RESULTS
Students don’t just learn fabrics—they start designing differently:
“I used to choose fabric based on appearance. Now I understand behavior—and my designs finally look the way I imagined.”
“The draping demonstrations completely changed how I think about material. I can now predict how a garment will move before I make it.”
“This course helped me stop making costly mistakes when selecting fabrics. It gave me real confidence in my decisions.”
