Course Overview

Introduction to information and data modeling

Using a combination of data modeling techniques in Sparx Enterprise Architect to create a three layer data model.

This course draws a picture of the workfield of data and information modeling. Addressing the various modeling methodologies and the reasons behind choosing these different modeling methods. We will provide practical tips on how data modeling offers added value for your organisation, based on numerous backgrounds including databases, datawarehousing, messaging, data architecture, data governance, software development, big data and (master) data management.

You can create your own models based on a simple case giving you the opportunity to create a three layer information and data model based on:

  • The conceptual data model for business representatives

  • The logical data model for describing details of the data and information for both business and technical representatives

  • The physical data model, for database design and message modelling for technical staff.

The following modeling techniques are demonstrated:

  • Concept lists and trees,

  • SIPOC,

  • ArchiMate,

  • UML class and object modeling,

  • Entity Relationship,

  • XSD,

  • CRUD,

  • RACI,

  • OET,

  • Data Flows,

  • Snowflake and Star ModelsBased

All these techniques can be applied on the simple case so you are able to practice the theory. You get examples of how to create every modeling technique discussed. The demo models are prepared in Sparx Enterprise Architect, but you can also create your own modeling tool. Furthermore you will receive an example repository for Sparx Enterprise Architect with all the modeling techniques discussed.

English pronounciation of the instructor. The audio quality in general. You can hear him walking around on a wooden floor the whole time which is very distracting.

I found this course hard to follow the first time around. however, after going back through the course a second time things started to click and made alot more sense. I would suggest that anyone taking this course, to follow along with Bert with your own instance of EA and build the diagrams with the lectures. Overall, great course! I certainly gained some insight into things that were understood at a high level but I struggled to put into practice.
