Certified Facility Manager (CFM) Eligibility Standards

To obtain the Certified Facility Manager® (CFM®) credential, all candidates must provide a combination of education and professional experience consistent with managing complicated building operations in a number of facility management competencies. Candidates with a bachelor's degree or higher must have three years of facility management experience; those with a two-year associate degree must have five years of experience. In addition, candidates with no formal post-secondary education may present eight years of qualifying experience. Qualifying experience must reflect several of the core competency areas of facility management, including operations, maintenance, finance, and strategic planning. Applicants must still meet the applicable experience prerequisite, agree to accept IFMA’s Code of Ethics, and complete a formal application outlining their variables for qualification. There are no education prerequisites needing completion to apply to take the exam; however, many professionals use exam-focused material to prepare them for the exam and solidify their understanding of IFMA’s competency framework.

The CFM credential is recognized globally and indicates leadership, technical competency, and strategic decision-making capabilities in the facility management profession.
