Course Overview

The Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Design [MSc(SED)] provides students with foundational knowledge of the methods, technologies and theories in smart city design and environmental design analytics. Through multidisciplinary education and practices in the design and management of smart cities and city resilience, MSc(SED) enhances students' understanding of the complexity of the challenges in achieving urban sustainability and environmental resiliency, while broadening their appreciation of the possibilities and constraints in design, technology, management and strategic policy at multiple scales.
The curriculum comprises 6 core courses (36 credits), 2 capstone dissertation courses (12 credits) and 2 elective courses (12 credits), leading to a 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time study (totaling 60 credits). The courses include:
- Bioclimatic Building Design
- Innovation and Smart Technology for Sustainable Development
- Environmental Simulation and Performance Assessment Tools
- Green Building Assessment and Climate Responsive Design
- City Risk and Resilience: Emerging Planning Theories and Practices
- Designing for a Changing Climate
- Environmental Policy and Management for Megacities
- Life Cycle Assessment and Net-Zero Carbon Emission
- Dissertation Part 1

What You’ll Learn

Assessment
SED6
Each course will be assessed through a combination of written examination paper and
coursework assessment, or by coursework assessment alone. The final grading for each course
will be determined by performance in the written examination paper and an assessment of
coursework.
SED7
(a) Candidates who have failed to satisfy the examiners in any course at the first or second
attempt, not including the dissertation, in any semester may be permitted to make up for
the failed course(s) in the following manner as determined by the Board of Examiners,
saved as provided for under SED8:
(i) undergoing re-assessment/re-examination in the failed course to be held no later than
the end of the following semester (not including the summer semester); or
(ii) re-submitting failed coursework, without having to repeat the same course of
instruction; or
(iii) repeating the failed course by undergoing instruction and satisfying the assessments;
or
(iv) for elective courses, taking another course in lieu and satisfying the assessment
requirements

(b) There shall be no appeal against the results of examinations and all other forms of
assessment.
