Course Overview

The Master of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery [MDS(OralMaxFacSur)] is a three-year full- time programme designed to enable candidates to achieve an advanced level of knowledge and competence in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The programme includes a prescribed course of study and a supervised research project.

The programme aims to enable students to acquire familiarity with most pathological conditions affecting the mouth and jaws; an understanding of the principles of patient management and experience of in-patient care; basic skills in oral surgery and selected aspects of maxillofacial surgery. Students will also gain knowledge of the relevant literature and the ability to assess such literature critically.

Upon completion of the programme, students who desire to do so, can use it as a basis for further training to achieve accreditation as a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Hong Kong.

What You’ll Learn

A. Faculty Core Courses (18 credits)
These set of courses introduces the scientific method and aims to help the students develop advanced scientific skills, including competences required to critically evaluate research outcomes as well as design and execute biomedical research. Furthermore, these courses will help the student to develop a thorough understanding of biomaterials and material science as applied in rehabilitation disciplines with focus in implant dentistry. The use of the current data search strategies and information technologies will be taught and fully utilized.

B. Discipline Specific Courses (216 credits)
These set of courses cover a wide variety of topics in the scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Each course consists of didactic and clinical components. Students will be trained to provide perioperative care to surgical patients and attend to emergency calls in the hospital. They will be trained to perform specific surgical procedures according to their levels under supervision.
