Course Overview

The aim of the Master of Science in Engineering in Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management [MSc(Eng) (IELM)] curriculum is to offer advanced postgraduate education in industrial engineering and logistics management to graduates who hold managerial, supervisory or administrative positions in industrial and service sectors. The curriculum is designed to enable students to acquire state-of- the-art knowledge in operations management, logistics and supply chain management, financial management, digital enterprises and e-commerce, industrial data analytics, intelligent systems, and other related topics. In line with economic developments of Hong Kong, China and other parts of the world, the curriculum has been continuously updated and strengthened.  Capstone learning experience is now emphasised in many courses; and new courses in supply chains and logistics, intelligent systems, machine learning, and industrial data analytics have been incorporated in the curriculum.

Industrial managers or engineers within an organization are those who are responsible for the design and management of supply chain and logistics operations, with the aim of providing value to the customers, manifested today by ever demanding customer experience and personalisation. Nowadays, the complexity of operations has greatly increased due to high degree of product/service customisation, business de-globalization and re-globalisation, and not least, advancement of innovative technologies. An industrial manager now needs to be concerned with supply chain issues in a global and sometimes, geopolitical-context.  Also, he/she must realise that technology and knowledge are the most critical resources for an organisation in gaining competitive advantage.  His/her effective management of these resources is crucial to the growth and profitability of the organisation.

Industrial managers are among the most important people within an organisation as they contribute to the long-term competitiveness of the organisation in a direct, tangible way. While Hong Kong's closer economic integration with cities in South China will bring numerous business opportunities, a company can prosper only if it has the right business vision and competence.
