Course Overview
This programme is developed with the objectives to:
(1) provide students with the basics and principles of Putonghua teaching, and a better understanding of Putonghua teaching in Hong Kong;
(2) further enhance students their Putonghua proficiency and assist them to prepare for Putonghua Proficiency Test and Language Proficiency Assessment (Putonghua);
(3) equip students with Putonghua oral reading and recitation techniques to enhance their Putonghua teaching skills; and
(4) offer students the opportunities to practise the Putonghua lesson planning and implement the Putonghua teaching skills and methods for effective teaching.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this programme, students should be able to:
(1) illustrate the basics and principles of Putonghua teaching in Hong Kong;
(2) demonstrate high-level proficiency in Putonghua language skills to fulfill the requirements of various proficiency assessments and teaching;
(3) apply specific teaching strategies such as application of Putonghua oral reading and recitation for effective Putonghua teaching; and
(4) design Putonghua lesson plans and illustrate the lessons with appropriate teaching tools, skills and methods.
Programme Structure and Modules
This programme consists of 4 modules with 126 contact hours.
Module 1 Overview of Putonghua Teaching (30 hours)
This module mainly introduces students to the basics of Putonghua teaching and Putonghua teaching methods. It aims to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills required to effectively teach Putonghua to Cantonese-speaking individuals. The students can also understand the influence of sociocultural context on Putonghua teaching and learning in Hong Kong.
Module 2 Enhanced Language Proficiency Training for Putonghua Teachers (30 hours)
This module is designed to provide students with comprehensive and in-depth training to build on their Putonghua proficiency to further refine students’ Putonghua listening, Pinyin, speaking, expressions and classroom language skills. This enhanced training is specifically designed for individuals from Cantonese-speaking regions and teachers. Upon completing this module, students will be able to enhance their Putonghua proficiency in teaching and develop the test-taking strategy to prepare for the National Putonghua Proficiency Test and the Language Proficiency Assessment (Putonghua).
Module 3 Special Topic in Putonghua Teaching: Oral Reading and Recitation (30 hours)
Oral reading and recitation are commonly used methods in language teaching. In this module, Putonghua oral reading and recitation are selected as the special topic in Putonghua teaching. Through systematic training, practice and a seminar, students will deepen their understanding of related learning activities in Putonghua teaching and develop ideas about their classroom applications.
Module 4 Putonghua Teaching Workshop (36 hours)
This module aims to equip students with the practical skills required for Putonghua lesson design, development of teaching plans, use of teaching materials and aids in Putonghua teaching. It also covers teaching activities, assessment methods and training strategies specifically designed for Putonghua teaching. Furthermore, it will incorporate Putonghua teaching demonstrations, simulated teaching sessions, and a seminar on Putonghua teaching. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to understand the learning needs of their target students, assess the feasibility of teaching plans, and evaluatetheir own strengths and weaknesses in the teaching process. It will empower students to build self-confidence and enhance their communication and presentation skills.
