Course Overview

The Master of Arts in the field of Museum Studies is an academic programme connecting traditional scholarly subjects taught in the humanities, such as Art History and History, with more practical professional tasks, such as public education and management. It teaches theories and practical procedures to understand the complex museum system, as well as activities including collecting, curating, exhibition making, restoring, preserving, documenting, public programming and education.

Works of art tell stories from the past and present. Museums are places to experience these narratives. One of the aims of museum studies is to understand how these contents are connected and how they can be prepared for an interested public and communicated through exhibitions. Another goal is to learn all about how objects can be collected, researched, archived and preserved for future generations

Full Time (one year, with classes primarily on weekday mornings and afternoons, and specific electives on weekday evenings and weekends.)(The semester courses offered by the programme will vary from time to time.)

What You’ll Learn

Students of museum studies learn how the activities of collecting, exhibiting, mediating and caring are applied to objects of cultural and scientific interest to humanity in public and private collections. Furthermore, students learn a critical perspective in dealing with source materials such as artefacts, archival documents and contemporary oral traditions. Through observation, interpretation and exchange with other academic opinions, they learn scientific argumentation and the basics of comparative research, which focuses on the object.
