Course Overview
Introduction
This programme emphasises the application of modern, sustainable, and energy-efficient engineering systems in the context of the built environment. It is also characterised by parallel themes of design and management of project work, complemented throughout by the drive towards sustainability and energy efficiency of engineering solutions.
Programme Features
Further studies
Our graduates have admitted into Master’s degree programmes, such as MSc Energy and Environment/City University of Hong Kong.
Entry Requirements
Holders of one of the following qualifications:
VTC HD in Building Services Engineering (including a pass in the enrichment module ‘Advanced Mathematics with Applications’)+;
VTC HD in Electrical Engineering< plus VTC Professional Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Technology in Buildings;
VTC HD in Mechanical Engineering< plus VTC Professional Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Technology in Buildings.
OR
Holders of Higher Diploma or Associate Degree in a relevant Engineering area (including a pass in the “Advanced Mathematics with Applications” module, or equivalent) from a recognised tertiary education will also be considered.

What You’ll Learn
Modules
Low Carbon Building Services
You will learn to develop appropriate low carbon design strategies for a building and estimate the building performance using computational methods. You will define the design tasks associated with quantifying sustainable use of energy, water, materials, light and sound. You will also critically evaluate the design proposals for engineering plant and systems involving the production, generation and conversion of energy.
Mechanical Services (CEF Module) (CEF Code: 36Z121672)
You will learn to analyse complex engineering plant and systems to solve problems relating to engineering specifications and performance indices. You will also be able to discuss practical issues related to achieving effective and energy efficient control of mechanical service systems and evaluate options, as well as discuss best practice regarding the specification of performance criteria to achieve sustainable building services plant and equipment.
Design Project
For the design project, you will develop a Building Information Management (BIM) execution plan for a services design of a commercial or industrial project. You will need to undertake an environmental site analysis, propose construction materials and built form to achieve environmental objectives (thermal, visual, acoustic, air quality), as well as select design criteria appropriate to a range of building services systems to meet performance criteria.
Interactive Systems and Comfort Controls (CEF Module) (CEF Code: 36Z141533)
Through undertaking a User-Experience design review of a building project, you will learn to derive, through applying engineering principles, a strategy for improving the user experience, both during normal building operation and in times of emergency, with an innovative user interface for a building that encourages sustainable behaviours. You will also learn to defend the usability of your design when faced by conflicting requirements of owners, users, maintainers, constructers and designers.
Energy Management and Performance Evaluation (CEF Module) (CEF Code: 36Z121664)
You will synthesise the role of an Energy Manager in preparing a feasibility report for an energy-related project in an existing building, accounting for energy generation/efficiency projections, technology assessment, regulation compliance, qualification for incentive schemes, lifecycle costs and user acceptability. You will also learn to undertake a formal post-occupancy evaluation – covering the areas of functionality, comfort, energy, sustainability and user satisfaction – using recognised procedures, related computer software and field data collected using a range of measurement and audit techniques.
CEF For part-time mode only. This course has been included in the list of reimbursable courses under Continuing Education Fund. The mother course (BEng (Hons) Building Services Engineering) of this module is recognised under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level 5).
