Course Information
Course Overview
If you ever wished for a simple layman understanding of FHIR standards and its implementation, then this is it !
**Update March 2026 *NEW COURSE LAUNCH & BONUS LECTURE ADDED* If you want to LEAD FHIR/HL7 integration projects without coding: Check out my new course FHIR & HL7 for Product Managers. Bonus Lecture added.
** Please note that this course is heavy on FHIR implementation and less technical. This will be helpful if you looking to learn implementation bottlenecks and related nuances. **
**Update Dec 2024 - PDF of the Lecture Slides are now available to download **
**Update July 2024: Added an assignment on FHIR strategy development :
Ravi is a healthcare IT leader at TESLA Hospital, a medium-sized healthcare facility known for its innovative approaches and patient-centered care. The hospital's management has recognized the importance of interoperability and seamless data exchange to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency. They have tasked Ravi with developing a comprehensive strategy to integrate FHIR-based solutions across the hospital's IT systems.
What steps should he take to develop the strategy ? Check out Assignment 3
This course is designed to bridge the knowledge gap for clinicians, tech professionals, and non-tech participants alike, providing a robust foundation in FHIR standards and their practical implementation in real-world settings. The focus of this course is more on the implementation/application aspects of FHIR and less on the technical components of the standard.
Through this course, you’ll learn about the basics of FHIR resources and messages and how to design, implement, and manage FHIR-based systems effectively. Discover how FHIR facilitates better patient outcomes, streamlined operations, and enhanced data exchanges across diverse healthcare environments.
Whether you're aiming to implement FHIR in your clinical practice, lead tech innovations in health IT, or simply expand your understanding of current digital health trends, this course equips you with the necessary tools and insights.
Here's a brief overview of each module in the course plan :
Module 1: Introduction to FHIR - This module lays the foundation by explaining what FHIR is and why it's crucial for modern healthcare interoperability, addressing the basics and the overarching goals of the standard.
Module 2: FHIR Resource and Data Model - Delves into the structure of FHIR, discussing the various resource types, their properties, and how they interact to model complex healthcare data effectively.
Module 3: Implementing FHIR in Healthcare Systems - Focuses on the practical aspects of implementing FHIR within existing healthcare IT systems, emphasizing integration techniques and challenges.
Module 4: Practical Use Cases for FHIR - Examines real-world applications of FHIR, showing how it facilitates better healthcare outcomes through examples from clinical and administrative perspectives.
Module 5: Build your first FHIR app with Gen AI - This innovative module invites participants to create their first FHIR application, incorporating generative AI technologies (ChatGPT) to enhance functionality and user experience.
By the end of this journey, you’ll be proficient in navigating the complexities of FHIR, ready to take an active role in leading & advancing healthcare interoperability within your organization.

The high level explanations make sense but some explanations can be more detailed/nuanced as to introduce related topics to a given concept while still making the content introduction level. Last video didn't have audio.

I would love a course focused on implementation and architecture topics, since as a developer, I was expecting something more about databases, protocols, data types, etc.
